Starting Your Architecture Firm: Katerina's Tips for Aspiring Architects

Taking the Leap: Starting Your Own Architectural Firm

The architecture field can be highly competitive, and the journey to becoming a licensed architect is fraught with challenges. Many young professionals dream of owning their own firms, but the path to get there is often unclear. In this episode, we chat with Katerina, a young architect, about her journey and the lessons she learned along the way.

Katerina’s Journey

The architectural licensing process involves a series of exams that test both theoretical and practical knowledge (if you're currently going through them, you know how tough they are!). While Katerina initially struggled with some of the exams, she found a way to make it work for her. The key? Consistency and perseverance. She points out that these exams are just one step in the journey, and failure shouldn't deter anyone from their goals. By focusing on her long-term vision, Katerina was able to push through the setbacks and earn her license.

Making the Transition to Firm Owner

The dream of owning an architectural firm is shared by many in the industry. However, this transition can be challenging. It requires careful planning, open communication with current employers, and a clear vision of the future. Katerina highlights the importance of transparency and advises aspiring firm owners to start the conversation with their employers early. She also stresses the significance of not burning bridges in the industry and maintaining good relationships with past clients.

Katerina’s advice for those considering this transition is to plan for the short and long term. This means thinking about where you want to be in one, three, and five years. It's essential to communicate with partners or spouses and ensure you have their support, especially as the financial situation can be uncertain when starting a new venture.

Reaching Out for Support

Starting a new business can be daunting, and it's essential to have a support system in place. Katerina suggests hiring professionals such as accountants and IT specialists to handle specific aspects of the business. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of having a mentor or a network of professionals to turn to for advice.

Vastu Shastra Consultation

Apart from her work as an architect, Katerina offers Vastu Shastra consultations. Vastu Shastra is an ancient Vedic science that focuses on harmonizing the energy in a living space. By analyzing the floor plan of a home, Katerina can provide recommendations to balance the energies and enhance positivity. This can involve small changes like rearranging furniture or more significant adjustments such as designing a house from the ground up.

Final Thoughts

Katerina's journey from aspiring architect to firm owner is an inspiration for many in the field. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, planning, and seeking support. She encourages those considering a similar path to reach out to her or other professionals in the industry for guidance.

We developed a Trimble Total Station Course. Our training program will consist of a two-week course, over four 8-hour days, where an individual will be taught everything about the Trimble RTS from set up to layout to processing and collection field data. Students will be given hands-on practical experience, including a jobsite set up that will require them to set up and layout specific points and elements of a building with a RTS.

The reason I am reaching out is we are prospecting a local Architect to create unique plans to upload into AutoCAD so the students can do the lay out with the total station on a training site. Working with an architect would add complexity to the surveying…
